Carmelo Mineo

Dr. Carmelo Mineo is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for High Performance Computing and Networking (ICAR) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), based in Palermo. He was born in Palermo, Italy, in 1987.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree (2009) and Master’s degree (2011) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Palermo. In 2012, driven by interests in laser ultrasonics and non-destructive testing (NDT), he joined the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) at the University of Strathclyde (UK) to pursue a Ph.D. in Automated Non-Destructive Inspection of Large and Complex Geometries of Composite Materials.

Following his Ph.D., Dr. Mineo continued his academic career at Strathclyde, serving as a Research Associate from 2015 and as a Research Fellow from 2018, gaining extensive experience in areas including robotics, sensors, mechanical design, software development, system integration, and control systems.

In July 2020, he joined ICAR-CNR as a Senior Researcher. His research focuses on advanced adaptive robotic systems, real-time control and programming, collision avoidance, instrument interfacing, data collection, and their applications in automated inspection and sensing.

Dr. Mineo was also awarded a two-year Marie-Curie Fellowship from the European Commission in 2020. In addition to his role at CNR, he holds a research affiliation with the Department of Engineering at the University of Palermo, where he leads research on robotic adaptive behaviours for non-destructive testing inspections in dynamic environments.

He has authored numerous publications in the fields of robotics and non-destructive evaluation, with a strong citation record reflecting his contributions to research on robotic inspection systems and sensor integration.
