Gareth Pierce

Gareth Pierce is Professor and Co-director of the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, UK, and Academic Director of the UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE). He also acts as Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lead Co-ordinator at Strathclyde, chairs the SRPe Robotics and Autonomous Systems Thematic Leadership Group, and is founder and director of SEARCH, the university’s applied NDT technology-transfer laboratory.

He holds the Spirit AeroSystems and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in in-process inspection of aerospace structures, and received his PhD in 1993 from the University of Manchester (UMIST) for the development of fibre-optic interferometers for the measurement of laser-generated ultrasound. His research combines robotics and autonomous systems for inspection, non-destructive testing and evaluation for manufacture, structural health monitoring and through-life asset management, ultrasonic, visual and electromagnetic testing, applied optics and instrumentation, full 3D metrology, and artificial intelligence and machine learning for data interpretation and multi-sensor data fusion, capabilities directly relevant to assessing the condition of components for reuse and remanufacturing.
